Captain Archibald Haddock
Captain Archibald Haddock is a seafaring pipe-smoking Merchant Marine Captain and one of Tintin's best friends. He is initially depicted as a weak and alcoholic character, but later regains his command and dignity. He becomes a socialite after finding a pirate's treasure and regaining his ancestral home Marlinspike Hall. He evolves to become genuinely heroic, volunteering to sacrifice his life to save Tintin's own. Throughout it all, the Captain's coarse humanity and sarcasm act as a counterpoint to Tintin's often implausible heroism.
