Gad was the first of the two sons of Jacob and Zilpah, and the founder of the Israelite tribe of Gad. He was a lucky man, and his tribe was known for its strength and courage.

Leah stopped conceiving after the birth of her fourth son, at which point Rachel, who had not yet borne children, offered her handmaid, Bilhah, to Jacob like a wife in order to have children through her. When Bilhah conceived two sons, Leah took up the same idea and presented Zilpah to Jacob so she could have children through her. Leah named the two sons of Zilpah and is directly involved in their upbringing.
