George Wickham
George Wickham is a charming and charismatic man who is introduced as a militia officer. He quickly wins the sympathy of Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of Pride and Prejudice, with his stories of being badly treated by Mr. Darcy. However, it is later revealed that Wickham is a manipulative and unprincipled man who is a compulsive liar, gambler, and seducer. He is also a ne'er-do-well wastrel who lacks the finances to support his lifestyle and cons credit from tradesmen and shopkeepers. Despite his flaws, Wickham plays a crucial role in the unfolding of the plot of Pride and Prejudice, as he is the actantial scheme opponent and a foil to Darcy.
